Wood Industry
Belize has plenty of forest resources, and the industry of wood boasts a long history.
In 1600, as a British Colony, Belize was the first Country to export wood to England ( mahogany, teak).
From the end of 1700 until 1959, export of mahogany pulled the Country’s economy. The main area where they produce furniture is Cayo District, due to the proximity to the lands of production of this type of wood. Typical products made by the manufacture of wood are the Maya doors, Colonial models, chairs shaped as shells, garden set in typical caribbean style, hammock chairs, coffee tables, office furniture and bed rooms’ furniture.
About 700 types of trees are original of Belize. This natural resource was very useful for the Country, so that Belize became competitive because the Country did not have to import from the international wooden market. |
