Government
Belize has a Parliamentary Democracy and its power is divided into three branches: Legislative power, Executive and Judicial power, each one independent from the other.
1°. The legislative power is carried on by the National Bicameral Assembly, divided in Senate and House of Representatives.
2°. The Executive power is assigned to the Prime Minister and to the Members of Cabinet, nominated by the Governor General on suggestion of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister, Dean O. Barrow, is the Head of the Government.
3°. The Judicial Power is carried on by the Supreme Court of Justice, composed by three Judges. The general elections are held every five years. The Prime Minister has the right to wind up the National Assembly and then to determine the elections’ date.
Belize is divided into six administrative districts: Belize, Cayo, Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek and Toledo. These districts are governed by Representatives of the Government (District Accountant); each city of the district has a Town Board, formed by seven members, while the Local Government of the villages is carried on by the Counsellors of the Village.
Belize is a member of the Caribbean Countries Community (CARICOM).
