Historical Outline
The history of Belize is very different from that one of other Central American Countries, which had been conquered by the Spanish.
Due to the particular conformation of the territory, Conquistadores did not succeed to expand their domination to Belize too.
Then, only after the second half of 1700, the Country became of some interest to the British Crown, following the settlement of the first colonies of British soldiers and sailors, till becoming a colony of the United Kingdom, starting from 1798 ( when the Spanish Army was defeated off the coast of Caye St. Gorge, concluding a long period of battles and fights between the two Countries). Only in 1862 the Country became officially a British Colony, named British Honduras.
From the first settlement, they established a kind of democratic Government, referable to the Burnaby Code.
The independence movements, which already started during the second half of 900, brought to the Independence of the Country on 21 September 1981, establishing an Independent State of Belize within the Commonwealth.
