Belize has one of the seven submerged wonders in the world.
Thanks to the wonderful corral barrier reef,  to the splendid Blue Hole,  to the three beautiful atolls, to 70 species of corals and 400 different fish.
The coral barrier of Belize stretches for 300 km. from north to south,  parallel to the coast at a distance of about 20 to 40 km: it is the longest and richest corral barrier reef in America – surpassed  only by the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
In this fantastic submerged world, where multicoloured sponges live, fans of diving meet exotic fish, deep canyons, and spectacular quarries. For this reason,  in 1966  the corral reef of Belize became a world UNESCO’s Patrimony.
In addition to the main reef, there are three atolls – special coral rings that surround  a lagoon not very deep- and the Cayes, small islets located close to the mainland. These have their own coral reef with fantastic submerged gardens, inhabited by various marine species; we are talking of very attractive spots, particularly loved by those practising snorkelling and diving.
In 1970 Jacques Cousteau, one of the first marine scientists to explore the aforesaid atolls (in one of these atolls  is the famous Blue Hole, rounded and 125 meters depth,  defined it as “one of the four diving sites of the Blue Planet   which you should not miss”.

Once a famous diving expert said “if you consider the length of the coral reef, the circumference of the three atolls and the areas of the  practicable diving  zone, you can say that Belize has more diving areas than Cozumel, Cayman Islands and Bonaire all together”.
