They are situated in the Northen-west corner of Belize, in the Orange Walk District. The area is about 817 km2 and it had been arranged for the conservation, scientific research, the harvesting of timbers, for mining of no-wooden products, for ecoturism and for educational purposes as foreseen by “Programme for Belize” that is a no-profit organization.
The area is formed by a forest of trees with large leaves, by a forest with swamp, by a forest made of palms, of savannah and marshes.
Due to its distance and the hunting prohibition, many types of animals who were at risk of extinction found their shelter in the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area: for example, Black Howler Monkeys, Central America Spider Monkeys, jaguars, pumas, tapirs, ocelots, turkey-cocks, deers and so on.
Moreover, it is a paradise for birds watching; ornithologist counted more than 355 types of birds.
Besides the wide natural history, in the internal area they discovered more than 40 Maya sites. The biggest Centre is “La Milpa”, that is only a little smaller than Caracol and Lamanai.
