Caracol
The ruins of Caracol are located in Vaca Plateau in the district of Caya, Caracol Camp near the ruins and connected near mile 46 of the Chiquibul Road which takes Western Highway to the west slope of Maya Mountain.
Actually, Caracol is one of the less accessible sites during the rainy season though it can offer one of the more suggestive spectacles. There are plans to improve access to the road.
To visit Caracol a permit from the Department of Archaeology and of Forestry Department of Augustine is necessary. However, it is advisable to contact a tourist guide or a tour operator.
Actually, Caracol is the largest known Maya site in Belize. The largest pyramid of Caracol “Canaa-SkyPlace” is 44 m.in height which makes it the highest man-made construction in all Belize. As Caracol is situated in the Chiquibul Rain Forest, the abundant nature increases the beauty of this magnificient Maya site.
