Xunantunich

Crossing Mopan River, Xunantunich is located 8 miles to the west of San Ignacio City, near San Jose Succotz Village in Cayo District.
Xunantunich can be reached by public transport, but after crossing Mopan River, it is necessary to walk one mile before arriving to the site entrance.
Xunantunich was one of the most important religious centre during the Classical Period.
The site is formed by six large squares and surrounded by more than 25 Temples and Palaces. The most important structure is “El Castillo” Pyramid (about 40 meters Height) and is situated to the southern boundary of the site.
“El Castillo” was the greatest structure built by a man all over Belize, till the discovery of Canaa near Caracol.
The most peculiar detail in “El Castillo” is the decoration in the south-eastern part of the Temple.
